Archery's a good sport, but you have to decide from the get-go whether you're going to shoot historic or modern.
Modern (aka Olympic-style) archery is very much toy-driven: pin and peep sights, compound bows, counterweights, rifled fletching, trigger releases, etc. It's also very expensive to get into, as your average bow kit is in the $400 range.
Historic archery's a completely different animal. I bought my fiberglass laminate bow for $75, and a sheaf of arrows for $30. If your form is good, you don't really need an arm guard, though a shooting glove may be very heplful for comfort.
