The remnants of Ivan are here, and I put my bonsai tree out on the front stoop again to water it. Since it's a juniper, it claims to be an outdoor tree, so leaving it outdoors all day shouldn't hurt it.
Last night most of the French translation students, including me, went to see Fog of War. Since it was a KSU independent film club showing, it of course had problems about five times (no focus, no sound, gaps between reels, etc. The funniest one was when the film stopped for some reason or other and I heard a very distinct ARGH from the booth).
Anyway, it made me wonder where the rest of the people I had gone to that movie with were coming from. I'm American, and I've been through several history classes, so I know about the American role in WWII, but I don't know what it's like to be from a European country and hear an American talk about it.
Vietnam is a whole other kettle of fish. France was a colonial power in Vietnam for a while, and the USA sort of blundered in where it didn't really belong and got stuck there. I don't know nearly as much about Vietnam as I do about WWII, because none of my history classes ever got past about 1950, but what I got out of the movie last night is that you can substitute "Iraq" for "Vietnam" and sit there wondering what the HELL the current administration is thinking and whether they've ever had a modern history class either and if so, why doesn't this sound familiar to anybody who can do something about it, and get all bent out of shape about it, or you can sit there and wonder how we're going to get out of this one, and hope it doesn't take ten years or so this time. (Which it probably will, if it ever actually ends. I wish it was easier for governments to admit they were wrong. We should have admitted it a couple of years ago.)
I had a terrible time trying to stay asleep last night. I kept waking up because I was too hot, but it wasn't that it was hot out, it was that it was humid. If I tried to sleep on top of the covers, I got cold, and if I got under them, I got too hot. Somewhere around 4 AM it finally decided to be cool enough to keep me under the covers for good and I slept a lot later than I meant to. I'm not sure my brain is really up yet, either. I keep having covetous thoughts about coffee. I could do something about that. Hmm....

Gah. Living in close proximity to a college campus seems to be taking over my brain.
