another one for the Minister of Convenience

Cookbooks are all well and good, but less useful than they might be. What I need is a cookbook for people who have electric stoves with burners that aren't level, finicky smoke detectors, and the wrong size pans, most of which have no lids (I use plates). Some of this stuff, I can get around (case in point: I don't have a large, deep skillet with a lid, so I just made curry in a really enormous stockpot because it wouldn't fit in my bigger saucepan), but sometimes it's thoroughly annoying. I can't broil anything without setting the smoke detector off. I wish they had put it further than eight feet away from the stove.

Mike's comment:

"That's why you take the batteries out when you're broilin'."

Tape a bag over it? Set up an exhaust fan for your kitchen window?
