Why is it socially acceptable to go out and sit by yourself in a coffee shop and drink coffee and read, and less socially acceptable to go out and sit by yourself in a pub and drink beer and read?

I took my stopped watch to Walter's Jewelry in Coolidge Corner, and the battery is fine; it's the rest of the works that don't work. So they're replacing them for me, for $55, which is slightly more than half of what I paid for the watch in the first place about ten years ago. They even gave me a loaner while my own watch is being fixed. I've never had a watch break down like that before, but then I'd never owned a Bulova watch before, either. (The Timex that stopped working did so because it went through the washing machine.)

Today would have been a lovely day to wake up, look at the weather, feed the cat and go back to bed. I wish I had done that.

I asked myself that very same question (pub/drink/read, though mine was whisky, not beer) when I was in Chicago two years back. Got lots and lots of funny looks, even though I was enjoying the live band that was there.
