It seems to me that these days, the amount of snow we get is generally inversely proportional to the amount of hype, panic, and school closings that happen before the snow gets here. If the pattern holds, we're going to get about six flakes tomorrow.

However, even if we get six feet rather than six flakes of snow, I still have to come to work tomorrow. We only close if there's a declared state of emergency, and the panic level isn't quite there yet. (Besides, whoever heard of declaring a preemptive state of emergency?)

At least some cities are already declaring pre-emptive snow emergency for tomorrow so people are forced to keep their cars off street so the plows can do their jobs. In some ways, I can see the wisdom of that tactic. On the other hand, the attitude of OMGPANIC really does irritate me. The kid's daycare is already putting out "we might be closed so be prepared" warnings. I'm not sure whether I would come to work with kid in tow tomorrow or just stay home if the daycare decides to close. I really didn't want to burn another vacation day tomorrow, though I do have plenty to burn if I need to.

Unfortunately there's a difference between "snow emergency" and "state of emergency". I only get the day off for the latter.

Anybody who struggled for 7hours+ to get home in the last big we had because businesses didn't let people go early enough probably appreciate it.

Yeah, it can be a bit overblown, but in all honesty, I prefer taking precautions and sending people home a bit early to the horror stories I heard last time.
