linguistic oddities

Why is it, I wonder, that the French word for "Christian" is chrétien, but the word for "Christianity" is Christianisme?

I wouldn't care about this if I wasn't writing this paper about exoticism, one of the facets of which is a criticism of 18th-century France. I keep having to remind myself that the inconsistent spelling is correct. Speaking of spelling, for some reason MS Word isn't having fits because I'm not typing English. Even when I am, it doesn't have fits about names, which it normally can't spell. I'm not complaining, mind you.

Bloody telemarketers! mutter mutter grumble snarl...

All right, back to getting useful writing done.
