dchenesEverybody has one kind of translation that they really don't like. Mine is legal, or anything having to do with convoluted language. It's probably easier to do legal translation with Trados, which remembers how all the archaic boilerplate language goes after you've done it once, but even doing it once is once too many for me. Last week it was treaties, this week it's corporate minutes. It doesn't really help that a French corporation and an American corporation aren't quite the same thing, and it also doesn't help that some of the context in my original document has been blacked out. I wonder if translating criminal law is any less annoying? It's more concrete, anyway.
I did, however, find the Encyclopedia of Corporate Meetings, Minutes and Resolutions in the library. (It's amazing what you can find an encyclopedia of if you look for one.) I gave up on the American Jurisprudence Legal Forms, which weren't getting me anywhere, and did a subject search on "corporate minutes", just to see if it knew what I was talking about. Lo and behold, it did. It's nice not having to mess around for ten minutes trying to find the exact collection and syntax of search terms to get the result you want. Last night I went through a good deal of search-engine gymnastics trying to find a US-International keyboard layout for OS X. I did find one, but for some reason it doesn't do ç or ê properly, so it's of limited use to me. (On the other hand, all I really wanted was to prove there's a less-than-three-keystroke way of getting a Mac to produce é and è, so the overall operation was a success.)
I have more work to do today, but I mostly seem to want a nap at the moment.
