[livejournal.com profile] sebastian_tombs asked me about five of my icons, so behind the cut are the explanations.

I took a lot of the groceries I bought yesterday and made good stuff out of them. (Still have to make tzatziki, though.)

I left home at 10:00 this morning and just got back at 3:00, and went all over the place and indulged myself a bit, and it was marvelous.

Today is Friday, and it's a much better day all around than yesterday was.

I got through a hellish lot of work today, despite multiple attempts to the contrary by the universe in general.

An overwhelming majority of my coworkers like my new favorite shirt, and said so.

The weather was just lovely for walking home, slowly, in. So I did.

Snip remembered that she knows how to purr, and purred at me. She's very good at it when she remembers she can do it.

Having been tagged by [livejournal.com profile] siercia yesterday to post about at least one happy thing for eight days, here's yesterday's:

I found the latest No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency book, which I didn't even know existed, in a bookstore yesterday, and read it outdoors.

A meme from [livejournal.com profile] kaasirpent:

Make a comment in this entry. I'll go to your profile, pick 3 userpics and interests, and then you explain them in your journal.

Stolen from several people (wording stolen from [livejournal.com profile] mangosteen):

Give me a suggestion for something to do in the coming year that is 2009. Large, small, serious, silly -- but really mean that you think I ought to do it.

All comments screened.

Here are three things I've done that I don't think anyone on my friends list has done:

1. Voluntarily stood under a waterfall in Ohio in February

2. Spent most of a night in the lobby of a Citibank office

3. Written and presented a paper at an academic conference for fun

Details of any of the above available on request.

March, it seems, is Question Month, so if you have a burning (or otherwise) question for me, ask it. (Comments screened; answers will be provided.)

Crushes:

Do I want to know? Kinda.
Do I need to know? No.
Do I want to deal with information I wish I hadn't got? Hell, no.

Therefore, no meme.

Work:

The next several weeks are going to be highly unpleasant, while we shake out who's doing what for whom with the crew we've got now, and who's going to do what for whom if we ever actually get permanent full-time help. Right now we've got two part-time people and a temp. What we really need is a replacement for L, a clone of me and a senior appointments person who doesn't do junior appointments (P&R is a tremendous time sink, and it's always stealing people right when I need SOP materials reviewed).

Other:

Still freezing. Still got mucilage in the sinuses. (Still not king, dammit? Or is that Still not queen, since this is me?) Would be looking for apartments except for lack of time during the day and utter lack of energy by the end of the day. Giving up trombone lessons at the end of the month due to lack of budget.

Tired. Busy. Wishing for warmer weather.

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] cuilean, some things I would tell my 16-year-old self:

- Lay off the driving tests for a while. You're not ready for it.

- Learn to trust people. Not everybody who asks you out will do it to embarrass you.

- Remember that dream about knowing several languages? Go after it.

- Listen to the voice in the back of your head. If you're dating somebody and it starts to feel off, get out of it. You'll get over the being lonely.

- Oberlin will be good for you, but taking Russian at 9 AM isn't a good idea.

- Don't get annoyed at having to spend a night elsewhere during your senior year. You'll spend it in a different elsewhere than you think, as a result of which you'll learn what "in love" feels like.

- Don't go to karate when you can't keep your mind in the dojo. You'll get hurt.

- You and your sister are different people. Don't dwell on what she's got that you haven't got. Go be your own person and enjoy it. (Sooner or later, your relatives will figure it out too.)

- Grad school will be an escape from the job you should have quit two years before. It will be the most fun you've ever had academically, and the least fun you've ever had socially. It will also get you to stand up in front of complete strangers and talk seriously about Captain Najork and his Hired Sportsmen.

- Don't forget how to play.

We opened a can of worms yesterday, and I really hope it isn't going to turn into a long, drawn-out, political battle. It shouldn't; what it really requires is for HMS Faculty Services and MGH to talk to each other and leave HMS Faculty Affairs (which is my department) out of it.

Anyway, today being a nice day, I left the kitchen door open this morning and remembered to take out the recycling, so I think I might have a kitchen again. Except for the lack-of-counter problem, at least, but that will only be solved by either moving or rearranging my entire living room and extending the kitchen into it. Not gonna happen, though, because cooking and carpet don't go together.

I think today calls for eating lunch outdoors, preferably in the quad on the grass somewhere, and also preferably barefoot. I might even do something radical tomorrow and wear a skirt if it's nice out again. (Shocking, I know.)

The copier is making worrisome noises, and I'm going to be using it a lot next week. Maybe I'd better mention that to somebody.
