Well, damn.

I just got e-mail from my mother, containing the fact that my "surrogate grandfather" had a stroke last week. Mentally, he'll be fine; physically, he's a bit of a mess. On top of that, my mom got a call from the police in Toronto wanting to know if she knew where to reach the next of kin for her college roommate, who had died of ovarian cancer on Monday. Mom never knew she had been ill.

I would say something else if I knew what to say, other than "well, damn".
