Jun. 8th, 2005 02:35 pmIt's hot out, and I seem to have lost all motivation to do anything useful. Well, almost. I did go hunt up some more places to send resumes to, although I haven't actually sent any yet. Some day somebody's going to have to have a KentLingua seminar regarding how to get hired as a translator. The seminar we had in April was done by a guy who recruits for IT, and has no clue how the language industry works or what skills/competencies/etc. are useful or marketable for translators, particularly translators with no real-world translation experience to speak of. As general advice goes, it wasn't bad, but I'd really like advice from somebody who's at least familiar with the language industry.
Speaking of the language industry, I ran into R yesterday. Apparently she's living in P's apartment over the summer, and P's apartment is in the same complex I live in. So I went over and watched Tea With Mussolini there last night. It's an entertaining movie, even though the British colonial attitude still baffles me. Why was "different" immediately interpreted as "inferior"? How can any people (country, society, organization) consider itself infallible to begin with, which is impossible, and therefore justify imposing itself on another people (country, society, organization) and thereby "improving" it? This is not a European problem. People have been doing this to other people since humanity began, and I think it must be part of human nature, because it seems to keep happening.
I hope this guy with the 1BR in Roxbury calls me back. He works with my aunt in Dedham, and apparently he REALLY wants to rent the place. My aunt has seen it and says it's in good shape. Failing that, I suppose I go back to Craigslist again. I would ask Why so difficult?, except I already know, so I won't.
