SDL, which is the relative newcomer in translation software, bought Trados, which is the established company with most of the market share. This is a bit like Apple buying Microsoft. I think if I'm going to buy translation software at all in the near future, I'm going to buy Wordfast, which has nothing to do with either, but plays well with Trados and runs on Macs. (This is, of course, predicated on my getting a job and being able to afford software in the first place. I wonder how theoretical the situation we talked about in class was, wherein an agency will provide freelancers with software just so everybody's working in the same program?)

I've packed all the easy stuff, and now I'm down to the stuff that just doesn't fit gracefully in anything. That gets frustrating in a hurry, and I would throw it all out and start over except that it's useful and I don't need to spend money on replacing useful stuff. It doesn't really help that it's 90 out, so I'm more or less stuck indoors with all this stuff (figuratively) laughing at me. I'm going to end up with several boxes of utterly random stuff, like pens and chopsticks and the remnants of the kitchen utensils and the contents of my desk drawer and my coat hanger collection and the contents of the medicine cabinet and the bottle of laundry soap and all like that there. Basically, it's the What The Hell pile to end all What The Hell piles. I would throw it all together in one box just to spite it, but the idea of unpacking it on the other end doesn't appeal all that much either.

At least I had enough brain to put all of the important papers in a manila envelope, write IMPORTANT on it in big red letters, and leave it where I can't avoid tripping over it. So I know where the truck rental info and the directions are, and I know where to put anything else I run across that I want to keep track of.
