Sometimes the things I'm ridiculously picky about amuse me. Case in point: notebooks.

I went into Bob Slate's since I was in Harvard Square anyway to buy custard cups. What I wanted was a notebook spiral-bound up the side, split up into sections with dividers, preferably with file pockets in the dividers, and with a non-cardboard cover. It had to be small enough to fit in my purse but big enough for me to write stories (as opposed to random ideas) in, and have sufficient pages to last for a while. And yes, even with all the options available in a stationery store, it took me 20 minutes to decide I'd settle for the one I ended up with. It doesn't have dividers, but the one that did and was the right size also had a horrendously ugly cover and not enough pages.

As silly as it sounds, I really do have reasons for being that picky. I know that spiral-bound notebooks will open out flat, and I hate having to break the spine of a bound notebook to flatten it. If a notebook has dividers, I can find things in it more easily because I know which section to start looking in. If it has file pockets, I can put random papers in them. If it has a non-cardboard cover, the cover is less likely to self-destruct if it gets bent or rained on, and is less likely to tear off the binding.

But who in their right mind spends 20 minutes buying a notebook? That amuses me.
