Spent the weekend in Noank, which was pleasant except for the bed. Dad accepted my observation that they would do the world a favor if they burned the 30-year-old twin mattress I had been sleeping on at Xmas, so this time I got to sleep on a brand new air mattress. Brand new air mattresses stretch. So, come 3:30 in the morning the mattress was almost entirely flat. I could have gone downstairs and finished the night on the sofa, but wasn't awake enough to sort myself out and not fall down the stairs. I stuffed a fairly flat pillow under my hip and went back to sleep. But my back let me know all about it in the morning. Next time we're all in Noank at once, it's my turn for the real guest bed.

But I got to go swimming, and I gave Mom her birthday present (a fairly depressing book by Atul Gawande, which she had asked me for, and some almond bark to eat while reading it so as to cheer herself up), and we all had a fairly silly conversation about the use of frogs in heart surgery (made slightly more sense in context, but not much) and barbecued pork chops without setting the lawn on fire.

On the way home we stopped at Jordan's Furniture to get L a new bed and mattress. If office chairs had been next door to bedroom suites, I would have looked, but they weren't, so I didn't. I went home and ordered one with the last of my credit card points. So sometime in the next week I expect a big flat box to appear on the porch, at which point I expect to spend an evening assembling the chair. I wonder what sort of tools I don't have will be required this time?
