dchenes: (katana)
Must be fall, because the Hairy Beasts came and curled up together after dinner yesterday. I, meanwhile, was making my second attempt at cider syrup for the season. Attempt #1 (on Saturday) set off the smoke alarm and damn near ruined a perfectly good stock pot, because I boiled it too hard for too long. Fortunately the pot was salvageable (rinse, soak, scrub, rinse, scrub, rinse, scrub some more, scrape, rinse) and cider is on sale this week, so I went and got another gallon and simmered it for four hours and ended up with a quart of syrup. That'll do to be going on with.

Yesterday I also made a cleaning fit list and killed most of it today. Today's a good day for that sort of thing because I can open the windows and let the cleaning product odors thin out. Anyway, I cleaned the bathroom, and the kitchen, and vacuumed the living room and the pantry (and didn't have the heart to chase the Hairy Beasts from room to room with the vacuum cleaner, so stopped there even though the bedroom rug also needs vacuuming), and put various things away. It feels less like I live in a pit, at least. There's still too much stuff on several horizontal surfaces, but most of it has been there for so long that it's scenery.

I went out for lunch at the Bee's Knees Supply Co. and ate a three-napkin brisket cheesesteak sandwich, for which I only had one (overworked, by the end) napkin. But it was a good sandwich, especially because they resisted the urge to put onions in it (they put sriracha in it instead). I shouldn't make a habit of that sandwich, though. Particularly because I finally fought myself back down to 151 lb as of this morning, after having gone up to 158 six weeks or so ago. I may be exaggerating, but I swear the sore shoulders had something to do with that too. I can't even express how much better I felt the morning after the cortisone.

There's a Portuguese-speaking painting crew next door (not Mario's, the other side) working on the porches. They wrapped three parked cars in plastic dropcloths before they started; I wonder if the cars belong to that building, or if somebody's going to get a shock when they find the Christo treatment on their car?
