Last night I had a class until 9:00, and walked home watching a really magnificent cloud-to-cloud lightning storm. The cloud-to-ground lightning storm showed up at about 2:00 this morning and woke me up, and now it's humid where no humidity should be. My fifteen-minute walk to campus this morning started me thinking about taking another shower. Yech...

I really don't want to know how much money I've spent in the last week. It was mostly necessary (all right, so I didn't NEED a VCR, but it falls under "Things that will be useful in maintaining my sanity", so I bought one). For the most part it was things like food, and wastebaskets, and cleaning supplies (wall-to-wall carpet necessitates a vacuum cleaner), and kitchen utensils, and dishtowels, and all the other things you take for granted. "What do you mean, I don't have any trash bags? There are always trash bags!" But, taken all together, it was a LOT of money. And I don't have any income any more. Dammit.

Speaking of which, it's very odd not having to leap out of bed at 7:10 in the morning and run off to work. I almost wish I still did have to, because it would mean I wouldn't spend so much time trying to figure out what I ought to be doing with myself. It's not boredom, but it's vaguely disturbing. So far, when in doubt, I do what coursework I can without internet access at home. (The cable modem guy comes on Saturday. Is it Saturday yet?)

I got back on the caffeine bandwagon at lunch, so this is going to be an interesting evening. Hopefully my desire to fall asleep in my translation theory reading will go away, though.

Whee!

It's nice to hear that you're doing ok. I've been thinking about you! Don't forget to email me your new address when you get a chance.

there are always trashbags!

this is why many people recommend putting some TP and other necessaries in a bag that goes with you and is the first thing you unpack. It's too easy to forget absolute necessities because you don't think of them!

Yep, you're now accumulating... Stuff. Vital household stuff, to be sure, but it takes up space and money and time.

You've missed all the Pup-bought-a-condo-and-has-no-household-goods fun! On Sunday we went to a parking lot near Harvard Square and got some random stuff from the amazing piles of things that students leave behind in the dorms, and they sell it really cheap for Habitat for Humanity. He bought two pseudo-oriental rugs, which have needed lots and lots of vacuuming, followed by shampoo-machine cleaning, and another shampooing to come in the future.

But he still needs silverware, dishes, pots, curtains, more chairs (comfy and kitchen/dining), art for the walls, etc etc etc.

I wasn't doing badly with what I brought with me, all things considered. Some of the stuff I bought last week was "whatever falls off the shelf and lands in the cart" stuff, which is why I now own a potato masher. I still need a TV stand or card table or something. The TV is not happy sitting on the ironing board.

My experience with secondhand rugs has been entirely awful, but that's just me. I like to know what color a rug will be before I buy it.
