Packing

I started packing for the odyssey this morning. Packing is a lot easier when you have spare brain cells to devote to it, and clean clothes to pack, and you're not doing it the night before you leave.

In a way, packing an entire apartment is easier than packing for a trip. When I'm packing an apartment, I put things in a box until the box is full, and then go on to the next box. It doesn't really matter what exactly is in the boxes, because it's all going to the same place, and as long as nothing gets broken, it doesn't matter that I've packed my sheets in with my glass mixing bowls and my winter coats in with my frying pans.

Packing for a trip, on the other hand, is a question of what I want to take, and what I can take, and what I should take, and where those categories overlap. The Deschenes Rule of Packing has stood me in good stead more times than I can count, but it does complicate things a bit sometimes. (The Deschenes Rule of Packing: you can take absolutely anything you want, as long as you can carry it all yourself in one trip.) It's gotten to the point where I start thinking Yes, I could take my computer, but I refuse to take three bags for a four-day trip, and one of those bags should be a backpack because I can put more things in it than I can in my computer bag, but my backpack isn't very professional-looking, and...so I wind up overthinking things, and most of the time when I decide not to bring a backpack on a trip, I wish I had.

One of these days I'll get this all figured out, or somebody will invent a backpack that doesn't look like a backpack.

So my question for you is this:

How long does it take you to pack for a weekend trip?

If I'm in a hurry, under half an hour.

Wait... Amherst, MA? How jam-packed is your conference schedule? As I'm unexpectedly unemployed, I could plan to be out that way for a day. Care to meet up for lunch?

Friday lunch might work, but that's the only time I've got.

Ah, well. Unfortunately, I have a prior engagement friday afternoon. I hope you have a safe and fun trip! Oh, and alas, [livejournal.com profile] whuffle, but hot-tubbing is out of my budget until I'm employed again.

Well, if you intend to join Whuffle and I at The East Heaven Hot Tub Company, you might want to bring a swim suit.
