We had some impressive weather here yesterday. The severe thunderstorms came over at about 4:00, accompanied by probably-50-mph wind gusts and so much rain that I couldn't see across the street. The sky turned green, too, but only after the worst of the rain and wind was over with. The tornado siren never went off, and even if it had, the safest place I can be when I'm home is in the bathtub. I don't have a basement, and two of the three other rooms in my apartment have windows (the third is the laundry room, and that's got the water heater in it). The nearest tornado shelter I can think of is on campus, which is a ten-minute walk from here. There was another thunderstorm that started at about 1:15 this morning. My sister called me today to find out if I had blown away or drowned or anything like that, which I hadn't. She says she got 70-mph wind in Ann Arbor, and her enormous hulking black cat (who hates thunderstorms) spent most of last night under her pillow. I can't imagine being afraid of thunderstorms. The only time that happens to me is when thunder wakes me up and I don't realize what the loud noise was.

I've added another item to the list of things to do when I have time and money at the same time: I want to learn Maori. Partly because I've seen it written and I want to know what it sounds like, and partly because ever since I read The Bone People by Keri Hulme, I've wanted to be able to understand it.

I wonder if I'll get to a point where I have time and money simultaneously in the next ten years?
