It's a good thing Dolores Umbridge is a fictional character, because she would've just loved the idea behind the nightmare I had last night. It had to do with semi-sentient thorn bushes and the amount of thorns they could stick you with. That was the first part, and I was having relatively little trouble with that, although I had to keep unwinding brambles from around my legs. I remember wearing a skirt that was more or less hemmed with brambles, because they'd gotten ahold of my skirt and were trying to get through it and stick me.

The second part involved my high school English teacher, who was a holy terror, having invented some sort of candy you bought at the movies. The candy was made of the essence of the thorn bush, and it would attach itself to anything and try to eat through it. The only way to get rid of the things was to squash them. In the dream, I was wearing my motorcycle jacket and I thought I was safe that way because the leather was thick enough, until someone said "Yes, but can you get out of it fast enough?" and I looked down and saw that one of the candies had managed to get up my sleeve and under my skin and was working its way up my arm. I was trying to force it down to my fingertips so the thorns would bloom out through the ends of my fingers when I woke up.

Sometimes I really wonder about my brain.

I've never read Diana Wynne Jones, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if reading Alphabet of Thorns by Patricia McKillip last week didn't have something to do with my nightmare.
