I've started translating L'Oiseau Bleu by Maurice Maeterlinck. I was talking to my parents about it and they said it would probably be a good play for a high school drama club; it's got a huge cast, most of which are ensemble parts, and while it has twelve different flavors of scenery, none of them are terribly complicated. On top of which, Maeterlinck had a definite vision of how things should be, and his stage directions and set and costume descriptions are quite detailed. Anybody know a high school that would want to use my translation when I get it done? (I'm kidding, but only half. If I put my mind to it, I could have the translation done and presentable by October.)

If I'm going to spend the end of this week/beginning of next week in Cleveland, I had better do laundry today. My friends do have a washing machine, but they don't have a dryer, and they hang up the laundry to dry in the basement, which takes about three times longer than I'm willing to wait. It's easier if I just bring enough clean laundry.

I wonder why it is that if I pour enough water for six cups of coffee into the coffee machine, I only get five cups of brewed coffee? (Sounds like one of those things that requires an explanation involving the relatives of the man in the refrigerator who turns on the light.)

The bush across from my front door, in addition to being full of sparrows most of the time, is starting to bloom and taking over the sidewalk. Actually, I think it's less of a bush than it is a conglomeration of climbing vines. It keeps trying to establish outposts in my front yard, and I keep having to pull them out. It seems to like to put down runners. It figures, of course, that the plants I don't want are the ones that aren't having problems. My inherited roses have something that makes its leaves look covered in chalk dust, and the leaves on my inherited chrysanthemums are turning red and/or dying off. It's probably just as well that I didn't try growing tomatoes, considering how well the rest of the stuff is doing. I've never had much of a green thumb anyway.

The more I read about the DNC in Boston, the more I'm glad I'm missing it. If they're going to justify searches on the T by pointing to the attack in Spain, how do they explain waiting four months before they start?

You make me think of a children's book I own in which that play was performed.

About a cup's worth of water ends up either remaining in the reservoir (to evaporate during the day), remains in the coffee grounds or gets boiled off as steam.
