So I had to go out and run errands today. It's hot and humid and I was wearing a black shirt, but that's a tangent I'll pick up later. Anyway, I went out, and on the way back I had to cross the Major Intersection in Kent, where Rte 43 meets Rte 59. The light changed in such a way that I would have had to cross the intersection three times to go home the short way, so I said To hell with it, only crossed it twice and went home the long way. Good thing, too.

See, one of my errands took me to campus, and because of the construction (or deconstruction) they're doing, I had to take a detour through a building, and in that building there was a notice that a new used bookstore opened downtown four days ago. I noticed that in passing and put it on the "go find it one of these days" list. As it happened, the long way home from my errands took me right past it, and far be it from me to walk past a bookstore I haven't been in yet. I mentioned to the owner that I had some books I wanted to get rid of, so tomorrow I'm bringing them to him. Yay!

I was rather annoyed at having to hike all over hell's half acre in a black shirt on an 87-degrees-and-humid day, but that's my own fault for running out of clean laundry, and I'm considerably less annoyed now. I think the local (extremely local, as in Historic Downtown Kent only) economy is picking up. In addition to the new bookstore, I saw one zoning notice on a property that wants to add a swimming pool, and one on a vacant lot that wants to build a duplex, and the public library project is starting next month. As far as I know, nobody's built anything new in Kent since I've been here. I'm taking it as a good sign.

Hooray! New bookstore!
