Apparently the complex I live in has been suffering a rash of attempted break-ins between midnight and 4 AM for the last several days. Just what I need to know before I go away for two weeks. Sigh. The would-be burglars apparently like to look for open windows and try to take the screens off from the outside and come in that way, but they keep waking people up in the process, so they never actually get away with stealing anything. However, I resent the fact that I can't keep my windows open at night while I'm here instead of running the air conditioner. Leaving the living room window open would be asking for it, and although nobody could come in through the bedroom window without waking me up, leaving that open would be a bad idea too.

Growf.

oh, you can leave them open.
Just get a strip of wood, hammer nails into so the points come out the other side, and attach them to the windowsills with tape (not duct, but maybe packing tape).
That should discourage.
Alternatively, you could replace the nails with broken glass, but that's messier to make.
