Given the recent spate of break-in attempts around here and the fact that my laptop could easily walk off if somebody breaks in while I'm gone, should I:

(A) Bring the laptop to Boston with me;

(B) Hide the laptop somewhere in my apartment and hope that if somebody breaks in, they'll only steal what they can see;

(C) Leave the windows locked and the shades down like I always do, leave the laptop on the desk and quit worrying?

Unless you would actually use the laptop (or would spend too much time stressing about it while you are here) I would probably vote B. *I* personally would do C but we all know how bad I am at retaining my personal possessions. :)

I think I'd do B, unless I wanted an excuse to bring the laptop anyway. If possible, I'd also back up anything personally important off the machine, just in case.

Bring the laptop with you to boston. That machine is your life while you are in school. There's lots of things in life that could be replaced. Your laptop would be one of the expensive ones. So it might jsut sit in a room all vacation. At least you know it won't be stolen.
Otherwise, consider taking anything you really value or that has monetary worth and either having a friend in Ohio take it while you are away, or find a strange place to squirrel it away. This may sound really strange, but a freezer bag in the fruit drawer of your refridgerator is a great place to keep jewelry as long as it is made of metal glass and stone. It's safe, and no right minded burgular would think to look in the fridge for goodies. And all you have to do to wear things is take them out and run them in warm water. (Got this trick from a New Yorker I know. Never used it myself. But when she lived in the bronx she got broken into 3 times and they never did get her jewelry.)

very cool - hadn't thought of that. I imagine you'd want to be careful with softer stones that might expand or shrink due to temperature changes (I'm thinking putting inlaid stuff in there might not be a good idea)

I'd say backup the data, put backup somewhere separate, and then find somewhere completely counterintuitive to stash the laptop (b). Make a note to yourself and put it in your wallet to remind you where you left it. That avoids disaster transporting laptop en route.
