random computer stuff
Aug. 25th, 2004 12:19 pmSince Lorac very graciously gave me a gmail account, and since in my "starving grad student" disguise I never upgraded to Panther, I discovered that Safari 1.0 and Gmail don't get along. Thus commenced the (short) search for a new browser.
I would've gone back to Netscape, but I've fallen prey to the opinion that Netscape is done, and I got rid of the copy I had. IE is Right Out, if for no other reason than because I really don't like browsers without popup blockers. It gave me fits last semester when I was doing a lot of web-based research in the grad lab and had to deal with six or seven popups per page. If I wanted to spend the money and upgrade to Panther, I would go to whatever the current version of Safari is, but (a) I'm still not convinced I won't be broke before Christmas and (b) I'm running out of time to do lengthy computer-related maintenance stuff, and backing up my entire computer before installing Panther is something I don't have time for.
So, that left me with Gmail's suggestion, which is Firefox. My only complaints about Firefox so far are that it got confused when I first installed it and I had to restart the computer in order to unconfuse it, and that it doesn't seem to want to import bookmarks from Safari, so I had to put them all in manually (fortunately I don't have huge numbers of bookmarks).
In any case, whoever invented the Google toolbar for web browsers should be sainted.

And tabbed browsing. Opera introduced it, but I prefer Mozilla's implementation.
And don't forget to check out the alternate browser themes. Those are fun too. :)
