In which I wax poetic about thunderstorms
Aug. 28th, 2004 08:00 pmI knew we were going to get a thunderstorm tonight. So when it started to get dark early, I stuck my head out the front door to see what the sky was up to. I wish I had had a video camera. For lack of one, picture this:
In the east, the sort of blue sky you get when it's been hot and humid all day and the sun is starting to set. Very pale blue, dead still and cloudless. Coming in from the west, an iron-grey cloud front, curved like a dinner plate at the edge. Right behind the edge, the entire sky is boiling black clouds. It looked like the smoke from a black-powder explosion in a movie, only up in the sky and in slow motion. But there wasn't enough of that to cover the whole sky; behind it was the solid, featureless grey-yellow cloud cover that means we're going to get a thunderstorm. Looking up at the cloud show, I felt like I was living in the bottom of a bowl filling up with thunder clouds.
So much for getting any cleaning done tonight. When the weather's like this, all I want to do is put on music and curl up in my chair and watch it happen.
