I want to resign from the world.
I am sick to death of being at work, setting up meetings just because nobody else wants to (but the meeting is urgently necessary), dealing with unpleasant people on the phone, and deciphering umpteen zillion versions of mangled English. Oh, and asking people stupid questions on behalf of my boss, and getting answers he doesn't like, and getting flak from both sides.
It's not that I necessarily want everybody to do exactly what I want when I want; I just want to be treated like something other than office furniture. I want people to be responsible for having their own writing implements. I want them to stop asking me every ten minutes if their package is here yet. I want to be able to understand what I'm being asked, the first time. Typical conversation between me and my boss goes something like:
"Did you get things?"
"What things?"
"Slide things."
"Oh, the slide pages? Yes."
Typical conversation with the students goes like this:
"They didn't come yet?"
"Who? Lab X? No, not yet."
"Did Lab Y come yet?"
"No, they come with the UPS stuff, and that comes around lunchtime."
(Repeat every half hour till lunchtime, at which point repeat every ten minutes.)
Sometimes, like lately, I wonder why I bother.
