Increasingly often these days, I go out to do errands and then realize halfway through that I wouldn't be nearly so tired, sore and grumpy if I had just gotten a Zipcar beforehand.
There are three different grocery stores I tend to go to: Trader Joe's, Shaw's and the Super 88. The Super 88 frowns on you bringing in bags of stuff from anywhere else, so if I go down there, I can't go to Shaw's first. The problem comes when I want to buy canned stuff for stirfry at the Super 88, because cans get heavy, and then I go to Shaw's and buy seltzer and have to lug everything home. If I remembered to arrange for a car, I could go to one place, leave the stuff in the car, go to the other place(s), come home and unpack everything and then return the car. (Assuming, of course, that the errands I have to do are in places I would want to drive around in on weekend days. Coolidge Corner and Packard's Corner ain't two of those places.)
And then there's remembering to bring the canvas bags with me when I go shopping anywhere, but that's an entirely separate issue.
Today I went on an extended trek, the extent of which I blame on the gorgeous weather. I left home at noon or so, intending to walk up to Harvard Square or possibly Porter Square if I felt like it, and buy cat food and seltzer on the way home. Halfway up Cambridge St. I decided I wanted to go to the library, so I did that and came out with three books. Problem being, I then had to carry the books and my jacket in my arms, because I didn't bring a big enough bag with me. So I got on the bus and went to Harvard Square and bought a bag. Books and jacket in bag, problem solved, went off to the JFK park and read books until it started looking mostly like rain. Got on bus, went to Coolidge Corner to buy yogurt. Ended up doing most of the week's grocery shopping.
So, to sum up: left home with purse. Came home again four hours later with purse, bag of books, two heavyish bags of groceries, sore shoulder, no cat food and no seltzer. And I wonder why I never seem to get enough of anything done on weekends...ye gods.
