The other day when it was cold enough to make me unhappy, I decided to close some windows. Little did I suspect it was going to turn into an epic battle.
The last time the windows got painted, the paint got put on thick everywhere. Which, therefore, means it was sort of soggy to begin with. Add humid weather and tight-fitting windows, and even hanging my whole weight off the top of the raised pane wouldn't break it loose. So I ran a pocketknife blade down the side of the window between the pane and the framing, and that worked by itself for one of them. For two others, it loosened the paint suction a little, so that I was able to wiggle the raised pane around enough to break the suction in the rest of the places it was stuck.
I still have one window in the back and one window in the bedroom that won't shut. The raised panes are really thoroughly stuck. I either need to borrow somebody heavier than I am, or I need somebody with a better idea. (Actually, I've got a better idea myself; whoever paints the windows next time should strip them first, and then use less paint.)
At least I probably won't have cold air coming in all over the place in the winter.
My brain hasn't caught up with me yet. It thinks I should be back on my grad school schedule, and therefore it refuses to shut off so I can go to sleep at night, and refuses to let me remember anything in the morning. I wish it would listen to my body, which falls asleep at about 11:30 and wakes up somewhere around the time I get out of the shower. If I can persuade my brain to let me go be horizontal, I fall asleep. Unfortunately I end up doing things like going into the bathroom to brush my teeth, and getting distracted by fuzz in my hairbrush, and deciding I have to do something about that immediately, so fifteen minutes later I still haven't brushed my teeth. Silly brain.
