I am at work today on the strength of an ironclad work ethic and coffee. If I'm physically capable of getting out of bed, I have to go to work, regardless of whether I'll be any use to anyone once I get there. Today I'm only being useful by dint of amazing amounts of effort.

I'm considering taking tomorrow and Friday off for reasons of mental health. I just can't bring myself to care about anything work-related. I find myself wanting to answer the phone with "Well? This had fucking well better be important", and wanting to tell people that if whatever they want is all that urgent, they can do it themselves. Not the best attitude for a secretary. I finally get motivated to do one thing, and that thing gets interrupted by something else I have to deal with, and then the interruption gets interrupted too. Sometimes I can deal with that, but not this week.

On the other hand, why is it that the faculty who are here less than three days a week are the ones who are entitled to anything they want the instant they want it (just ask them)? On Monday I got to deal with one who complained constantly about his old office, complained constantly about not having an office while the old office got renovated, and is now complaining about having to move his stuff back into the new office. He's here only on Mondays and Fridays and he's always late if he bothers to show up at all, and he takes more days off than the three full-time faculty members combined. Sigh.

My grad school application is progressing, slowly. I've rewritten my writing sample entirely, although it still doesn't have an end. It's all beginning and middle. I need to buy a handheld tape recorder for my oral statement of purpose and record that, and fill out all the applications in ink, and e-mail my undergrad advisor about the letter she was writing for me, and put the whole packet together and get it in the mail by the 15th. Actually, since the 15th is a Saturday and the following Monday is a national holiday, I'll give myself until the 18th. It'll still have time to get to Ohio before March.

Ye gods, am I tired.

I have an old hand-held microcassette recorder if that's all you need. I don't have a full sized one. But you're welcome to borrow it if you can use it.
