I've been looking at various cat shelters online, but the pre-adoption applications are putting me right off. Most of them ask for most if not all of the following:

- proof of residence
- proof of permission to have pets
- valid photo ID
- your vet's name and number
- when your current pet went to the vet last
- what it went to the vet for
- photocopies of vet records for current pets
- what happened to your previous pets
- references (not your relatives) who have known you for two years and can testify as to how you treat your pets

You fill out all this stuff online (or in person if they'll actually tell you where the shelter is), and THEN they review it and can turn you down as unsuitable before you even get to meet any cats.

Six years ago when we adopted the Bloodthirsty Jungle Demons, all we had to provide was proof of residence and proof of permission to have pets, and probably photo ID, but I don't remember that part specifically.

I know it's better to get pets from shelters rather than pet stores, but if all the shelters are going to regard me as a serial axe murderer until I can prove otherwise, why should I bother?

If the stuff they are asking for is too much for you to do right now then consider Craislist. There are lots of people on there looking to find homes for unwanted pets every day.

And if you need a non-relative to tell them how you treat your pets, give them my name!
