Usually I only set foot in Starbucks if I've had to go to the CLS building, because if I have to deal with the security people over there I'm damn well going to get cocoa afterward. Today required heavy artillery to get going, though. My brain just wasn't having any of this "get out of the house and go to work" stuff this morning, so I came to work the long way, via Starbucks.

Since Citibank pre-emptively canceled my credit card a month or so ago and gave me a new number, I had to go and swap numbers for Amazon (I was trying to buy Dad a birthday present right around then) and all my automatic-payment stuff. The ones I forgot, and hence got sternly worded emails from about unprocessable payments, were my domain name host and the gym I've been to twice in three years or so. I think I'll let the gym membership die, particularly since as far as I can tell, that's the only way to cancel a gym membership.

Speaking of domain names, I have come to the conclusion that I need to hire a web designer, because I'm never going to get around to doing that myself. I know what I want, content- and layout-wise, but what I need is somebody to set up a CSS template which I can then plug content into. Does anybody know what the going rate for web design like that is?

Since my vacation week in three and a half weeks (yay!) is going to be one of those "alternately do useful things and do nothing" weeks, here's the list:

- Get pants altered
- Investigate picture frames for postcards
- Rearrange living room
- Get web site set up
- Get the boxes of books Out Of The House, Dammit
- Fix the nail hole in the office wall

I'm sure there's more list than that, but see above re: my brain today.

I would be careful about the gym. The only calls we've ever gotten from a Nasty Collection Agency turned out to be from an old gym membership the Jon thought he canceled, they thought he hadn't, and when the credit card expired (essentially the route you're taking) they simply kept racking up the charges and sent it to collections.

Don't ruin your credit over this. Cancel in writing and if they keep charging you, contact the Attorney General. That is the only thing that gets their attention sometimes.

I was going to say the same thing - technically if you just let the account lapse with a non-working card, you're failing to meet your membership obligations, and that can end badly.

Most memberships do require that you cancel in writing - send it signature required so you have proof it was received. most places will then send you a letter confirming your action.

Thirding. Do not assume the gym membership is dead or assume it will go away. Get a copy of your contract (if you don't already have one) find out what needs to be done and do that. Otherwise, the margins tend to be thin enough that they will probably show up at the most possible inconvenient time demanding money with the law on their side.

Send me what you want re: web design...
