budgetary gymnastics

dchenesI've got oral approval to take the last two weeks of August off, and my brain keeps coming up with places I could go for a week without crossing an ocean. I don't think I really want to go places, though; I need a relaxing-type vacation. India, although it was many other things, was not relaxing. I suppose I could do something completely silly, like stay home but go out for dinner at a different place every night for a week. That probably wouldn't be good for my health, never mind my wallet, though.
Besides, if I'm really being a good kid, I'll take the leftover India fund and pay down my student loan with it. In the long term, paying off the student loan will give me a $230/month raise, even though in the short term it's no fun at all to be throwing potential vacation money at the loan payments. (And the little voice whispering "You know, $1400 isn't going to make much of a difference against $16,000" isn't helping either.)
Theoretically I'll be getting a small raise sometime soon, when I move into working on junior promotions. However, I have no idea when "sometime soon" is. At this point it's pretty much any time between the end of this month and Christmas. And this assumes I can get out of senior promotions, which, so far, I can't. Not only am I taking on new things in senior promotions, I'm still doing things I'm supposed to have stopped doing four months ago. (That's mostly because the person who's supposed to be doing them now can't remember from one case to the next how to do them, so she keeps coming and asking me. Over and over and over. But that's a different rant.)
