Today was the second time I've done a reading at a funeral. I don't want to do it enough to get good at it, but at least this time I wasn't hopped up on cold medicine and faced with the word "incorruptibility" three times. (That was Pepere's funeral, and I had the worst cold I'd had in ten years.)

I've been to three Roman Catholic funerals for three of my grandparents now, and at least this one had something to say about Grandpa as a person, rather than only as a member of the Roman Catholic faith. (I was very angry about that after Memere's funeral, but she had been housebound with Parkinson's disease for about ten years previous, so the priest probably didn't know her at all. But why didn't anybody tell him anything?) And all I could think of when they brought out the incense was P.G. Wodehouse: "The vicar of St. Bartholomew's-in-the-West wants to know, What about incense?" "Tell him he mustn't."

I was surprised at how well Grammie is doing, but I guess having Grandpa in the hospital and then in rehab before he died got her used to not having him at home. And she doesn't have to worry about him any more. That's not to say she won't worry about the rest of us, because she's a champion worrier and she's always done that.

Onward, I guess. But he was the only Grandpa I had, and I'll miss him.
