I know where the weekend went, but I still think there ought to have been more of it.

Saturday started with my waking up and thinking it was cold in my apartment. I was right; it was 57. The new thermostat obviously wasn't working. So after consulting the internet and the instructions that came with the thing, I decided there must be something going on with the wiring. The building is so old that there were only two wires coming out of the wall (one blue and one supposed-to-be-white but so old it's brown), and the "white" one was in the wrong slot. So I swapped it to the right slot after a minor detour to find a small enough screwdriver, and lo, the heat came on and turned off when it was supposed to! Score one for the good guys. Now if I can just figure out why the duct in the kitchen produces a loud BANG when the heat comes on and goes off, and whistles when air goes through it, which has never happened before this year...

Saturday was also the My, How You've Grown Festival, and that was good. I met my almost-one-year-old second cousin Sam and my five-month-old second cousin Geoffrey, and I managed to be good about what I ate, which is more of a feat than it sounds like since this was the Italian side of the family and there was food everywhere. I had two hardboiled eggs and a piece of bread and butter and some fruit and a lot of salad. I ended up bringing most of the salad home again, but that takes care of lunch for me for a lot of this week, and it's pretty good salad even though it doesn't have radishes in it.

On Saturday night I went to bed at 8:00. Being in a small house with 20-odd people ranging in age from 91 years to 5 months for most of a day is tiring all by itself (even though we do all like each other), and I started the day by arguing with the thermostat. Imagine my surprise when I woke up at 8:45 on Sunday morning; apparently I needed the sleep. So I let myself have a fairly slow morning besides, and started the running around after lunch.

I did get to the Galleria and back, but I didn't want it to take an hour and then some to get there in the first place. There's just no good way to get from Brighton to East Cambridge by public transportation on a Sunday. I did, however, get some more pants that almost fit (just you wait, 'Enry 'Iggins; they'll be fine in a couple of weeks or so). I was going to go winter-shoe shopping too, but it took so long to get to the mall in the first place that I didn't bother doing anything serious about shoes. I merely came home again and proceeded to do all the usual weekend stuff: boil eggs, do laundry, do dishes, portion out salad, etc. Meanwhile I was sort of watching the second football game of the day. I had decided I wasn't in the mood for more ugly (and the Patriots game last week was UGLY), so skipped them this week.

The clocks change next weekend. I wish they wouldn't, but I guess that gives me March to look forward to.
