Last weekend I had a minor cooking fit and ended up making two things that you basically go look at once every ten minutes after they get going. In short, good stuff to cook while watching football games, because every other time there are commercials, you can get up and go inspect the cooking. So I made cider syrup and cretons. It smelled very like fall in my kitchen all weekend (cider, and cinnamon and cloves). And then I went and steamed some brussels sprouts and ruined the atmosphere, because steamed brussels sprouts will do that. But I've still got cider syrup and cretons, so life is good.

The third Pogo book, which I ordered last September and was expecting to get between Thanksgiving and Christmas (although it was supposed to be out this past summer), is now supposed to arrive sometime between Friday and Monday. Hooray! I put up with the shifting publication dates because it's worth owning all the Pogo there was. Each of the first two books had strips I hadn't seen before, so I'm hoping the one with the donut and bean sandwiches shows up soon. I'm beginning to think Dad made that up, although he swears he didn't.

I think Leo the Late Bloomer is done for. He was fine until I actually put him in a pot, at which point he got fungus gnats and (I think) root rot, and all his leaves except one shriveled up and fell off. The one leaf that's left is mostly shriveled up, but has just enough viable surface to keep itself going for now. He's not growing any new leaves, and he's not getting any taller. I shoulda just left him in his quart jar, where he was happy as long as he had wet feet. That'll teach me to trust fancy potting soil. (What does one do with most of a bag of fancy potting soil that apparently has fungus in it? The internet says spread it out on a cookie sheet and bake it for a while. Ain't gonna happen in my oven.)

Since the doctor's office said they'd call me if any of my test results came back worrisome, and since that was two weeks ago and I haven't heard from them, I think I'm probably free to keep eating anything I bloody well want to on Wednesdays. Sometimes it leaks over to dinner on Thursday too, but I seem to be keeping my weight at a fairly consistent level. Once a month I gain two pounds whether I want to or not, but at least it doesn't stick around for more than about a week afterward.

Yay, the cat-and-needle embroidery is framed! Argh, in that the $40 discount added itself right back on in taxes, and I don't really want to think about the credit card bill. On the other hand, if I hadn't had it framed, it would sit there folded up in the "done but not framed" bag and need MAJOR ironing before I took it to be framed. And besides, having gotten the first gas bill after the new furnace, I can confidently say that the framing only cost slightly more than one regular oil delivery. So, all in all, yay.
