I'm technically on vacation. All that means is that I spend every other day doing a lot of useful stuff.

On Sunday I returned all the rental gear, and explained to anyone who would listen and was worried about it that no, I'm not giving up, it just wasn't going to happen on Saturday and it won't happen this fall. Then I put the car back in the Official Zipcar Spot, because I didn't feel like dealing with it any more than I had already, even though I hadn't bought kitty litter yet. I didn't want to deal with parking anywhere in the vicinity of Harvard Ave & Comm Ave either. And then I went home and did not much for most of the rest of the day, accompanied by football games.

On Monday I did a fair bit of not much in the morning, but I had decided to make bean soup. I quick-soaked a pound of blackeyed peas, and then realized I didn't have any broth to make actual soup with, so went out and bought that and a small Napa cabbage to put in too. Came home, put the broth and garlic and pepper in the beans, and thankfully checked on them 10 minutes before they were supposed to be done, because they were done already. Added tomatoes and cabbage and a cup of elbow noodles and let it all cook until the cabbage wilted, and then put a lid on it and turned the heat off and ignored it for half an hour. It was passable after that; hopefully it's better today, but I haven't tried it yet. I forgot to put dill and paprika in it, but in an emergency I can always add them when I want to eat soup for lunch (or possibly breakfast; ain't nothing wrong with soup for breakfast).

Today I went to the dive shop and spent fifteen minutes on the same page as the training manager and the rest of the time trying on gear. The Plan is this: I will own all of my own neoprene gear (ordered today) and play with it in the pool all winter. When I go for open water again, it will be mid-April or so, one-on-one with an instructor. I spent another considerable lot of money today, but it will be worth it to have a wetsuit that fits properly and a hood and gloves I can work with. I tried on wetsuits for about an hour, and lo and behold, the one I was wearing on Saturday was the wrong fit besides being the wrong size. No wonder we didn't get along so well.

After that I went to Target and invested in such interesting things as a boot tray, and a file box to put all my homeless sheet music in, and a bottle of Drano for the bathtub, and various toiletries. I was maybe going to do that tomorrow, but decided to do it today since I was in the neighborhood anyway and tomorrow's LMA errand should be a there-and-gone. After which I came home and am now waiting for the first load of laundry to be done in the dryer so the towels can go in.

Tomorrow I have to go to HSDM, but only for long enough to stand in line and get shot full of flu; otherwise I am Not There. I would rather do it at HSDM than at Walgreens with everyone else in the world sneezing on me. I could have done it last Wednesday, but I didn't want to try diving with a sore arm, and I always get a sore arm from the flu shot. After that I can come home and pick up where I left off doing not much on Sunday night.

We seem to be having intermittent rain and occasional thunder today; I got rained on between the dive shop and Target, and rained on hard between the bus stop and home (fortunately I had the boot tray to put over my head, since I didn't have an umbrella). But since I am not trying to go to the World Series tonight, I don't care.
