This weekend I mostly stayed home and did stuff around the house, including cleaning out the freezer and finally tackling the organization of my office. I had to make room for the scuba gear storage, but I didn't actually sort anything out at the time, just shoved things into other corners and onto other horizontal surfaces. That wasn't going to fly, long term, so yesterday I did something about it.

In the storage bin with the taxes, I found bank statements from 2001-2006. Back then they not only sent you bank statements, they sent you canceled checks. So I hauled out the shredder and created 11 gallons of excelsior, and got to be massively glad there's more than $461 in my bank account after I pay bills these days. I remember not having much money, but I'm glad I didn't remember exactly how skint I actually was. Rent poor and student loan poor at the same time wasn't fun, and that was even after I started working for Harvard. I still pay the bills that can bite me worst (credit cards) first, even though I don't even have to think about it that hard these days. The old order was student loan, credit card, rent, and then everything else in whatever order. And when I had enough cushion to do it, everything over $1000 left in the checking account went into the savings account.

Anyway, 11 gallons of excelsior, one broken file storage tub, one bag of trash including the busted foot-powered air pump (bicycle and/or air mattress), one bag of recycling including all of my grad school exams and exercises (forgot I had them, so obviously I didn't need them, and I still have the dictionaries), and the office is a bit less chaotic. I think I even have a couple of empty file storage tubs. And I could set up the sewing machine if I wanted to, now that the box of stuff that's been sulking at the back of that desk since 2013 is gone. I still need to get the sewing machine some professional help, but the damn thing is HEAVY and the nearest professional help is in West Roxbury.

As a reward for cleaning out the office, I bought myself a ticket for Endgame on Friday, and got the last decent seat (by which I mean not in the front row; actually it's in the back of the middle) for the 5:00 showing at Fenway, so there. Next week I won't have the energy, because next week is chorus dress rehearsal week Monday and Wednesday and dive club meeting on Thursday, and besides, it's probably going to get harder to stay unspoilered after the movie's been out for two weeks. At least this morning the world seems to be distracted by Game of Thrones, which I don't care about because I never got into the show. Any minute now for the next book would be fine with me, though.
