Craigslist strikes again...I'm looking at an apartment in Somerville tonight. (Central St at Medford St). I figure it can't hurt to look, at least.

One of the problems with moving is that I can never quite afford it because the security deposit on the place I move out of is never available until I've moved out and already put another security deposit on the place I move into.

I know why I went to grad school, but I think it would have been easier, housing-wise, if I hadn't. Nepotism rules, but only when you're there to take advantage of it.

Oh well. We shall see. Worst case, I stay where I am for another year and figure out how to cut $250 a month out of my current budget, or get a second job (which is probably easier in general).

hmmm...

The place I saw tonight was at least in the running.

What I liked:

It has space, storage and sunlight, and it's pet-friendly (four things I am currently mostly or entirely lacking).
It seems to have a decent cross-draft.
It has new windows.
The ceilings don't show any signs of leaking.
The landlord only wants first month's rent and security deposit.

What I didn't like:

It's a mile and a half from Davis Square, which is a longish walk in the winter, and the commute to work will be something over an hour.
It's on the third floor, up a narrow and dark (but carpeted, which amuses me) staircase.
There are fewer outlets per room than there are walls per room.
There are bus routes around, but I don't know that they go anywhere useful. (I could find out about that, though)

The landlord really wants it occupied by July 1, but I have to give 30 days' notice here, so the earliest I could move would be August 1 (which is a Tuesday, which is slightly inconvenient).

I told him if he hadn't heard from me by Wednesday, I'd found somewhere else. So I've got until Wednesday to make up my mind.
