I had a fascinating dream last night. It was the first half of a movie musical, but when I woke up I couldn't remember the words or the tune to any of the songs and mostly couldn't remember where they went in the story. I know they were songs I've never heard before, and they had lyrics and choruses and tunes that made sense.

The story itself was interesting; it was about a relationship between a Polish (female) construction worker and an American (female) who had something to do with the construction company. The construction company was building a bridge, and the Polish woman saved a piece of the bridge from floating away, and that brought her to the attention of the American woman. Somewhere in there was a telegram from somebody famous (I forget who), telling Hitler that he quit and Hitler could find somebody else to design his bridge. But nobody was taking Hitler all that seriously, so it must have been before WWII.

There was a random scene at a bus stop where some other Polish workers were talking about how they sabotaged their factories so they wouldn't meet quotas.

There was also a scene in a church, where the only song I remember the gist of took place. It was sung by the American woman, and amounted to "This relationship can't work, am I crazy? But what if it does work?" Then it cut to a restaurant, where the Polish woman's family (stepmother? and father, at least) met the American woman and she proposed to the Polish woman, who accepted. I woke up at that point.

I really want to know where and when this was, because I want to write the story. It's obviously an alternate universe, and I think it was in Europe somewhere, but I have no idea what year it was supposed to have been. I guess I spent so much of yesterday at work being detail-oriented that my brain decided half a story would suffice. But it doesn't!
