Yesterday I tested the office door to see if I could conceivably shut Lily, the litterbox with the special litter in it, a food dish, and a water dish in there all day today and get the urine sample the vet wants. Yesterday, the door shut. Today, it wouldn't. I tested it from the inside yesterday, wanting to see if Lily could open it, and arrived at the conclusion that she couldn't. But I didn't test it from the outside yesterday, and today it's so humid that the latch got stuck in the door and the door won't stay shut. I shut it as far as I could anyway, because Lily was in the closet at the time, but I fully expect to come home and find the special litter unused, and Lily in the living room. Or the litter will be used and I'll have no idea who used it. Sigh. I ordered another 2 lb of special litter from Amazon, because if I have that, I won't need it.
No pool time this weekend on account of Labor Day, which was actually fine with me because I need a little bit of time to process what I've been learning. Second classroom session on Thursday, and I plan to go right after work and buy my own wetsuit and order boots if they don't have any without zippers. That's the last of the gear I absolutely want to own for now. It might be nice to own my own regulator setup eventually, but that's eventually. I also think that maybe I need to pay more attention to my breathing on land, because I've caught myself taking a really big breath every so often and doing that in the water screws up my neutral buoyancy.
I spent Saturday doing five loads of laundry, three of which were bedding. Somewhere in the process of bleaching, washing, and drying, one corner of the bottom lining of the mattress pad shredded itself, so I suspect I'm in the market for a new mattress pad. It will probably hold together for a little while longer, but I think the next time it needs washing I'd be better off replacing it. The only other thing I did on Saturday was walk to Whole Foods, which is a one-mile round trip. In that one mile I counted 45 moving trucks. Schadenfreude was alive and well and living in my apartment on Saturday.
On Sunday and Monday I didn't do much of anything, except finish The Dark Forest. I found it pretty depressing, and I think I won't bother with the third book. The Three-Body Problem was interesting both because of the premise and because the author is Chinese and his cultural perspective is completely different from mine, in terms of how people react to situations. The Dark Forest is heavier on the cultural perspective and I got tired of the military social politics. (Side note, hooray for N.K. Jemisin having won a third straight Hugo, but that still won't get me to read the book that won it. She killed off my favorite character in the previous book.)
Chorus starts again tomorrow and I hope I can tolerate it better now that I've had some time "off". Which reminds me, I had better type up the minutes from last month before somebody pokes me about them. Somebody already did, actually; I got a call on Saturday night asking me what the name of the electronic organ we're renting is. Fortunately I could find it in about five seconds.
I did my civic duty and voted in the primaries this morning. I wish there weren't so many ossified unopposed candidates running for their tenth or so term, because that makes me bitter and jaded. Unfortunately I don't know how to make it better, and I have no interest in running for office myself. Aside from the fact that I don't want to, I couldn't afford it if I did.
