A family friend who's sort of my surrogate grandfather has had another stroke and is in the hospital. He and his wife were supposed to be going on a cruise in South America tomorrow.

I wish I hadn't heard about this until tomorrow; I would have been able to deal with it better if I had had more distance from coming home from NY and going off to a class I had to prepare for in a hurry.

Damn.

Having very considerately not rained for the last week's worth of cloudy days, it is of course raining today. That wouldn't mean much of anything if I didn't absolutely have to do laundry today (my sister is showing up sometime Saturday en route home from Massachusetts, and staying overnight, and I don't have any clean towels).

Completely by accident, I found out that the unidentified bush across from my front door is, in fact, a trumpet vine. A very large trumpet vine. There was an article about weeds in the New York Times online yesterday, and it had a picture of a trumpet vine, and I said "Eureka!" I started reading the article in the first place because it had a picture of a pokeberry plant, and I have very fond memories of messing around with pokeberries. "Mess" is the operative word, because ripe pokeberries are bright screaming purple, and so is the juice you get when you squash them, and all sorts of fun can be had with pokeberries if you're a kid and you know not to eat them.

The linen I was waiting for arrived yesterday. I was sent more than I ordered, because a quarter yard only cost 18 cents more than what I needed, and came out to $15 even. So now I have a little extra linen to play with at some point, which is all good. The other good thing that came out of this is that I had been staring at the pattern and thinking there was something that looked wrong, but I couldn't figure out what. Yesterday I figured it out and fixed it, and now instead of looking at it and going ARGH, I look at it and think "That's better. Go me!" I love it when things work like that.

Hm. I need to buy some more fruit today, too. Time to make a list.

Wow, a whole weekend when it didn't pour down rain once! I feel absolutely ashamed of myself for not going outside and basking in it yesterday, but I think I needed a day of doing nothing, considering how much sleep I seem to have needed.

Saturday was a lot of fun. We went out with some friends and went hiking up and down Newbury St. for a while and had ice cream, and then we went to the friends' place in Medford and watched some rented anime (Argento Soma, which is more or less The Iron Giant with an anime slant) and had crepes for dinner. Mine was avocado and tomato and Monterey Jack cheese and spinach. Good stuff.

I keep muttering about making cookies or something. I would make scones if it wasn't humid out, but I learned my lesson last time. I probably left an entire scone's worth of batter stuck to the counter, the bowl, the spoon and myself. Baking always amuses me, because it was a rather improvisational process for a while. Before we had a rolling pin, I used to use a pickle jar. We still don't have anything to cut out cookies with, so I use water glasses. I'm not enough of a cook to make up the recipe as I go along, but I can make up the equipment. I guess in that respect, I'm my father's daughter.

Off to conquer the filing I skipped out on last Friday
